Top 15 Best Available Hotels in Lenham to stay

History of Lenham, kent.

Lenham, often known as “Leana’s homestead or village,” is derived from the Old English “hm,” which means “village, homestead, estate,” along with a warlord’s name. Lenham is listed in the Domesday Book as Lerham and Lertham. The river Len was given its name by the village.

Saint Mary the Virgin is honoured in the Grade I-listed Lenham parish church. The first church was constructed by the Normans, and it was destroyed by fire in 1297. It appears that the fire was intentionally set, for which Archbishop Winchelsea condemned the offenders in 1298. Over the ensuing 200 years, they rebuilt and expanded the structure.

There were four bells in the tower as of 1552, but Robert Mot added one in 1592, and James Bartlett added a tenor in 1686. To complete eight bells, Robert Catlin cast two trebles in 1751. St. Mary’s church was characterised as a “big, attractive edifice” with a “square tower at the west end” in 1798 by Edward Hasted. This tower houses an excellent clock that strikes the hours and quarters as well as a set of chimes. There are two chancels and two isles in it. In 1867, the Victorians reconstructed the east wall. The bells were rededicated by the Bishop of Dover in October 1960 after John Taylor rehung them in a new frame in 1959.

On July 1, 1884, Lenham Railway Station debuted on the Maidstone to Ashford line of the London Chatham and Dover Railway.
Three individuals’ remains were discovered under the floor when Kent author Robert Goodsall bought and started rebuilding the 15th-century Hall House in 1946. The three people—two men and a woman—along with the various weaponry have been determined by tests to be roughly 1200 years old.
