nTodaynis one of the six language days established by the United Nationsnorganization UNESCO. Each of the language days focuses on one of thenU.N.’s six official languages: English, French, Arabic,nChinese, Russian, and Spanish.
n
n
n
nBut the idea behind the language days is tonencourage multilingualism (the ability to speak more than onenlanguage).
n
n
n
nSpanishnis the second most-spoken language, if you go by NATIVE speakers, nafter Mandarin Chinese. (English is the most spoken SECOND languagenand the second most spoken language overall, counting native speaker and second-language speakers, again after MandarinnChinese.)

nIt’snthe official or national language of 1 country in Europe (Spain), 1ncountry in Africa (Equatorial Guinea), and 19 countries in thenAmericas (Mexico, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, El Salvador, CostanRica, Panama, Colombia, Ecuador, Venezuela, Peru, Bolivia, Paraguay,nUruguay, Argentina, Chile, Cuba, Dominican Republic, and PuertonRico). Spanish used to be an official language of the Philippines, from the mid-1500s all the way up to 1987. Since then it has hadn“voluntary” or “optional auxiliary” language status in thengovernment – but it is used very little in everyday life in thenPhilippines, and fewer than one percent of the population speaksnSpanish fluently!

nSpanishnis a commonly spoken language in a few nations that don’t claim it asnan official language: Andorra, Gibraltar, Sahrawi Arab DemocraticnRepublic, Guyana, Belize, Trinidad and Tobago, and the United States.nAnd there are Spanish-based creole languages spoken in the Caribbeannislands of Aruba, Bonaire, and Curaçao,nin the Philippines, and in Guam and the Northern Mariana Islands.
n
n
n
nSpanishnisn’t called “Spanish” by Spanish speakers – instead, it isncalled either españolnor castellanon– which translate to Spanish or Castilian. There are othernlanguages spoken in Spain, such as Basque, Catalan, and Galician, sonmany people do not think it is proper to refer to the language ofnCastile as Spanish.
