Inlove Carl Sagan’s books, including The Demon-Haunted World, nand I especially love his subtitle for that book: Science as anCandle in the Dark. n
n
n
n
nOfncourse, “the dark” is a metaphor for ignorance and, quite likely, nfear and superstition. Science is a great way of lighting up the darkn– of learning what is true, of dismantling superstition, and evennof diminishing fear.
n
n
n
nAnothernway of expressing that idea is “Reason as a Candle in the Dark.”
n
n
n
nItnis human reason that is celebrated by HumanLight. Other valuesncelebrated during today’s holiday include hope and compassion, ntolerance and cooperation. In other words, today people arencelebrating the best aspects of humanity – including those aspectsnwe refer to when we call someone “humane.”

nWhatndo people do to celebrate HumanLight? Of course, gathering togethernwith family or friends tops the list – and as you can imagine, mostnpeople enjoy eating together at these gatherings. Some people alsonbring in other festive touches such as music, dancing,ncandle-lightings, decorations, live entertainment, videos, talks ornreadings or other presentations, crafts and games for the kids. Thenthree colors of HumanLight are red, blue, and gold. n
