nKnowingnthat the Dutch colony that eventually became New York City was callednNew Amsterdam, I thought that “New Holland” might refer to thenlarger New York area. But, instead, the Dutch territory in NorthnAmerica was called New Netherlands.
n
n
n
nKnowingnthat there are several towns, villages, or communities called “NewnHolland” in the U.S., I still assumed that this sale might benlocated here in North America.
n
n
n
nWhatnI didn’t know is that there a LOT of “New Holland”s in the world!nFrom an island in Russia to a settlement in Jamaica, from a villagenin England to the entire continent of Australia, a lot of places arenor have been called Nova Hollandia or some other form of New Holland.
n
n
n
nThenone we are talking about today was in what is now Northeast Brazil.
n
n
nThenDutch West India Company created several settlements and eventuallynthe Dutch Republic controlled almost half of Brazil. n
n
n
n
nHowever, nwhile the Dutch were settling parts of South America, the Spanish andnPortuguese were settling other parts of the continent. And there werensquabbles and battles over the land, for sure. (I didn’t see a reportnof battles by native peoples against European settlers, but that hadnto happen somewhere, right?)
n
n
n
nThenPortuguese ended up winning a decisive battle against the Dutch, andnon this date in 1661, the Treaty of The Hague was signed, and NewnHolland was formally ceded to Portugal in return for four millionnréis.
