With summer being over and most of us still trying to get used to the moist autumn climate, it is especially nice to reminisce about your last summer holidays. My summer holiday destination was Portugal which is amongst the Britons’ favourite holiday destinations in Europe with more than 2 million British people travelling to the country every year. Particularly popular is the Algarve area in the South of the country. No wonder: The southern Portuguese region is rich with culture, heritage and last but not least, some stunning beaches that are definitely not to be missed out.
So which beaches should you definitely visit when travelling to the Algarve? You might struggle to see all of the over 100 beaches during your stay, so below is a selection of some wonderfully paradisiacal ones that are certainly worth a visit.
Praia do Camilo

This beach is located between the famous Praia dona Ana and the Ponta da Piedade in the bay of Lagos. It is rather small and through a little tunnel you can reach another part of it. Once you have made your way down the stairs to Praia do Camilo, you won’t be disappointed. Beautiful golden sand and incredible waves welcome you. However, the sea is a bit rough around there, so if you are not an experienced swimmer, you are safer staying near the coast. You may also want to give the restaurant O Camilo a try – perfect for fish lovers and located above the beach with a spectacular view over the sea.
Meia Praia

If you are looking for a huge beach to walk along for miles, Meia Praia is for you: A beautifully sandy beach that is definitely a great choice for families. Indeed, the biggest beach in the Algarve is recommended if you are with kids as the sea is comparatively calm. Nearby you find a range of nice bars and restaurants.
Praia da Luz

Praia da Luz is famous for its rocky shore which is great if you fancy some clambering. Be careful though – in between the rocks hide some nasty sea urchins. Further towards the east the beach becomes more sandy and on the very east of the beach there are some impressive cliffs that can even be crested if you are daring enough.
Praia do Beliche

This is without a doubt my favourite one out of the list. The view from above is just incredible! Praia do Beliche can be found near the most Southwestern point of Europe – Cabo do Sao Vicente, or the place where Europe ends. Whilst the descent is rather tedious (to say nothing of the way up…), the white beach is simply stunning and completely makes up for the arduous path. Alongside the stairs you even find a little grill house in the rock where you can enjoy flame-grilled fish before you jump into the turquoise blue water.
