Yardsticks – by which all others are measured…

An updated, expanded, constantly evolving version of my “yardsticks” list; that is, my own personal preferences amongst the oeuvres of the many filmmakers who have each, in their different styles, motives, and preoccupations, defined something I love about cinema. The films are in alphabetical order. This list is highly personal and subject to alterations of feeling as time goes by. The core rule, as ever, is one film per director, notwithstanding co-directing credits or uncredited work; no documentaries.
